The Need to Step Up My Game.

A lot of my friends and mentors of late have been on my case about my reluctance at what feels to me like self promotion. That is, when it comes to marketing writings beyond just my almost daily social media and blog posts (those more personal therapy).

Then this week, I received an old copy in the mail of an invitation from 2009, which I had never seen, and truthfully, never knew that it had been secretly mailed out across the greater Winston-Salem area, Lexington and to other dear friends, some out of state.

My friend found it tucked away in a purse belonging to his now deceased spouse, one who was a local, state and national government leader. She had always been an encouragement and I might say one with great credibility among all who knew her, whether they were mayors, governors or even former presidents.

Maybe this was a sign to step up to the plate?

The invitation was sent out without my knowledge, and was a surprise ordination on behalf of the community, to include the mayor (not me, though I was also one at the time). Several pastors across multiple denominations attended, dear friends, various business associates, marketplace leaders, fellow educators, and a dear former school superintendent with whom I had previously served.

I actuality thought that my wife (complicit in the planning) and a former pastor couple were taking me out to dinner. I must admit being puzzled when they walked me into the Millennium Center, and into a room full of familiar faces!

Though I had been ordained previously, this was one of those once in a lifetime moments, providing a tender review of my life impact by way of testimonials, all followed by a nice dinner reception at a local university facility.

It was a fabulous night and a most thoughtful way of recognizing my engagement across the region.

Again, marketing myself is not my forte, assembling real estate properties, facilitating novel ideation, strategic planning and promoting the accomplishments of others, sure.

Yet, even my for-profit business, Master Counsel and Associates, has been seen by some as a covering for ministry, though some amazing partnerships have been launched and unlikely deals closed.

My life, my "Sweet Spot" truly has been more about helping friends than creating income, though God has surely blessed us me abundantly.

A well published author, upon reading my latest draft manuscript "Come Let Us Reason Together" shared these words for my prompting just last week: "Your's is a message that needs to be heard, but writing is half the task, getting it out in front of the right audience is second half of the journey!

Now at age 76, I'm in my 4th quarter, but there's still plenty of second half left!!
