"Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him." Isaiah 36:6 NIV
When I read verses like Isaiah 36:6, I often hear revealed the underlying threat of suffering, which always surfaces when power is threatened by justice. And as well, the costly remedy of grace long planned for deliverance from ego's seducing pull.
There is still a tiny edge of literalism that causes me pause in my orientation toward this both/and mystery of scripture. However, when a whisper of grace is found in an otherwise merciless passage, my heart still leaps.
Lord keep me always open to the "Word", the clarion voice of the Spirit that accents the mystery so deeply woven throughout scripture, and the message of love so easily missed, when no allowance is afforded for thought beyond the text.
Hope you hear it!
